Curcu-Plus is a proprietary blend of curcumin, pine bark extract and Oregon grape root extract possessing strong anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory and mood enhancing properties. A small amount of piperine (a chemically defined substance from Piper longum) is added to the product to enhance absorption of its key ingredients.
Curcumin is the principal ingredient of turmeric (Curcuma longa), a curry spice and a traditional Asian medicinal herb with a long history of use as a treatment for inflammatory conditions in China and Southeast Asia. In vitro and in vivo studies, especially clinical trials, indicate curcumin may be a potential therapeutic agent in many chronic diseases such as inflammatory bowel disease, arthritis, pancreatitis, chronic anterior uveitis, and cancers. Curcumin shows strong anti-oxidation and anti-inflammatory activities.
Pine bark extract is a highly concentrated extract of Pinus massoniana, a species of pine native to Taiwan. The product used in our formulation contains over 95% of proanthocyanidins oligomeric flavonoids possessing strong anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory activities. Proanthocyanidins have low acute and chronic toxicity and protect against oxidative stress in several cell systems by doubling the intracellular synthesis of anti-oxidative enzymes and by acting as a potent scavenger of free radicals. Dilation of the small blood vessels has been observed in patients with cardiovascular disease, whereas in smokers, proanthocyanidins prevents smoking-induced platelet aggregation and reduces the concentration of thromboxane. In asthma patients symptom scores and circulating leukotrienes are reduced and lung function is improved. Immunomodulation has been observed in both animal models as well as in patients with lupus erythematosus. Proanthocyanidins relieves premenstrual symptoms, including abdominal pain and this action may be associated with the spasmolytic action of some phenolic acids.
Oregon grape root powder is derived from Mahonia aquifolium is a species of flowering plant in the family Berberidaceae, native to western North America. The main chemical constituents of Oregon grape root powder include berberine, berbamine, and oxyacanthine, both white alkaloids. Berberine is a plant alkaloid with a long history of medicinal use in both Ayurvedic and Chinese medicine. Berberine has demonstrated significant antimicrobial activity against a variety of organisms including bacteria, viruses, fungi, protozoans, helminths, and chlamydia. Currently, the predominant clinical uses of berberine include bacterial diarrhea, intestinal parasite infections, and ocular trachoma infections. Berberine also has shown activity against fungal infection due to Candida albicans. It possesses synergistic effects with fluconazole even in drug-resistant Candida albicans infections.
